The “3 Wise Men” is a strong shot made with three great names in the worlds of whiskey: Jack, Johnnie, and Jim.

The 3 Wise Men is a drink recipe that blends three types of whiskey, each with brand names that are named after a man: Johnnie Walker, Jack Daniel and Jim Beam. It’s usually served as a shot, rather than a cocktail. And in fact, it’s technically not a cocktail at all since all of the ingredients are liquors, with no mixers.
Why is there a drink recipe named after the Three Wise Men of the Bible? Who knows! This was a popular shot when I was a bartender, and yes, it was mainly ordered by guys, probably because of the “manly” name and strength of the drink. However, this is a great shot for anyone who loves whiskey and wants to avoid sugary cocktail mixers. Just be careful, this one is strong!
Ingredients
- 3 Ounces Jim Beam
- 3 Ounces Johnnie Walker Red Label or Black Label
- 3 Ounces Jack Daniels

- Orange Slices
- Orange Peels
- Lemon Slices
- Lemon Twist
- Maraschino Cherries

Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.
- Gently shake or stir to mix and chill.
- Strain and pour into large shot glasses.
- Garnish with your choice of fruit, if desired.
Yields: Four 3oz shots
Variations
- “Three Wise Men Go Hunting” – Add 3 ounces of Wild Turkey bourbon to the recipe.
- “Three Wise Men Visit Mexico” – Add 3 ounces of tequila, such as Jose Cuervo or Don Julio, in keeping with the male name tradition.
Prep Tips
- If you prefer your whiskey shots NOT to be chilled, you can simply stir the ingredients together in a large shaker tin. Shaking with ice does water the drinks down slightly.
- This is a strong drink, with no mixers. Please keep this in mind and enjoy responsibly.
- The 3 Wise Men shot is usually not served with a garnish, but a piece of fruit can help take the bite off the whiskey. I’ve provided suggested garnish ideas in the ingredients list above.
