A popular variation of the classic kamikaze shot, these Blue Kamikaze Shots have the same sweet and sour citrus flavor, with an eye-catching blue color!

Blue Kamikaze Shots
The blue kamikaze was the first shot I ever tried at a bar in college. It was sweet and so easy to drink that it became my drink of choice for a year. I’ll totally admit that when I was young I wanted drinks that didn’t taste like alcohol…and this one totally fit the bill!
If you like sweet drinks, this is the perfect choice! The original kamikaze shot is made with vodka, orange-flavored liqueur, and lime juice and is light yellow in color. To make the blue version, you simply swap out triple sec for blue curacao, which is another orange-flavored liqueur that is bright blue in color.
Flavor-wise, the blue kamikaze is sweet and sour, with sweetness getting the edge. You really can’t taste the vodka much at all! The bright blue color makes them festive and approachable. You can prepare it as a cocktail over ice, but it’s more commonly served as a shot.
The kamikaze was a popular drink in the 1970s. There’s a story that it was created by US soldiers stationed in Japan in WW2, but the more likely origin was in the United States, and perhaps the name “kamikaze” came from the fact that it’s usually drank as a shot and it’s sneakily strong.

Recipe intended for readers 21+
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.
- Shake well for about 5 seconds.
- Strain and pour into shot glasses
- Garnish with a lime wedge, if desired.

Prep Tips
- Shaking with ice does add a bit of water and air bubbles to the shot. For a completely clear shot, like pictured here, you can chill the ingredients beforehand and shake without ice.
- This is a sweet and sour shot that is perfect for adding a sugar rim to the glass. To do so, dip the rim of each shot glass in a small dish of sweetened lime juice, then into a small plate of sugar.
- For a less strong shot, you can add more lime juice (or sweet and sour) to the shaker.
- The traditional recipe uses sweetened lime juice as the mixer, but I’ve almost always seen it prepared with sweet and sour instead. This is probably because most bartenders have sweet and sour ready at their well. Feel free to use whichever you prefer, the end result will be very similar in taste either way.
