Manhattan Cocktail in a martini glass

Manhattan Cocktail

This classic cocktail takes just three ingredients and is so easy to make! You will feel so classy as you sip on this whiskey cocktail from a martini glass. This cocktail is perfect for any situation, whether it’s poker nights or parties.

The Manhattan is not a “beginner” drink or the right cocktail if you don’t want to taste the alcohol — because the Manhattan is entirely liquor! It is only slightly diluted by the ice during stirring and it served neat (without ice).

The whiskey is the true star here! A hint of sweetness from the vermouth and a splash of bitters smooths things out and adds depth of flavor.

Where Did the Manhattan Originate?

As the name suggests, the Manhattan Cocktail gets its name from the place where it was first created. Like many classic cocktails, the exact moment of invention has become a sort of legend. In this case, the Manhattan cocktail was supposedly served at a party attended by Winston Churchill, hosted at the Manhattan Club in New York City.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Type of Whiskey is Used in a Manhattan?

Traditionally, rye whiskey is what is used to make a Manhattan cocktail. However, you’re welcome to use your favorite type of whiskey or bourbon.

What is the Difference Between a Manhattan and an Old Fashioned?

The Manhattan and Old Fashioned cocktails are similar in that they are made from whiskey and bitters. They’re both served neat (no ice).

The primary difference is that sugar is used to make an Old Fashioned, while a Manhattan gets its sweetness from the sweet vermouth.

Another distinction between the two is the type of whiskey used. A Manhattan is usually made with rye whiskey, while the traditional Old Fashioned uses bourbon whiskey.

Finally, glassware is a consideration. Manhattans are often served in a martini glass or champagne coupe, while an Old Fashioned might be served in a lowball glass or rocks glass. This short glass tumbler is sometimes called an “Old Fashioned Glass” too.
