There’s hardly anything more refreshing than an icy cold piña colada on a hot day. It might also be the most well-known “vacation” cocktail! In fact, the Piña Colada is the national drink of Puerto Rico.
While it’s roundly accepted that the Piña Colada was created in San Juan, the creator itself is disputed, with claims ranging from a hotel bartender to an actual pirate!
But you don’t have to be a pirate to enjoy this tropical tasting libation! If you like Pina Coladas, you might be shocked at how easy they are to make yourself! All you need are a few simple ingredients and a blender to whip up this easy cocktail in just a few minutes.
The classic piña colada is made with just three ingredients: light rum, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut. It can be served on the rocks, but “frozen” style (blended with ice) is probably the most common way you’ll see a piña colada prepared.

- Blend until smooth.
- If needed, add more ice and blend again if you prefer a thicker consistency.
- Pour into glass and garnish with maraschino cherry and pineapple wedge.
Prep Tips
- Yield – The ingredient amounts listed above are for one serving. If making for two people, you want to double the amounts, for three people you would triple the amounts, and so on.
- Pineapple – Freshly squeezed pineapple juice adds a bright and tangy sweetness to the cocktail. Of course, canned or bottled pineapple juice can also be used and will still taste delicious.
- Ice – Try substituting half of the ice cubes with frozen pineapple. This will not only create a luscious smoothie like texture, but it will also help keep the drink chilled without watering it down.
- Variations – For a sweeter drink, add a Tablespoon of simple syrup to the blender. For a tart twist, add a splash of lime juice.
