Purple Hooter Jello Shots
This easy jello shot recipe is great when you want something purple and fun to drink. Originally a cocktail recipe, these jello shots are perfect for parties and entertaining, with a fun grape and berry flavor in every cup!
The “Purple Hooter” is a shot recipe that consists of vodka, raspberry liqueur, lime juice. It’s easy to make and fruity to drink, so it’s always a popular shot order at nightclubs and college bars. We decided to make it a jello shot instead, incorporating grape jello for an extra vibrant purple hue.
Where Does The Name “Purple Hooter” Come From?
Most cocktails have a backstory, whether true or not is another matter. I’ll have to admit I’m a little skeptical of the legitimacy of the Purple Hooter legend.
As the story goes (well, the story that I found when I was doing a little digging on the history of this drink), the name was given to a man who blew a loud horn to scare away gorillas in an African village. Not buying it? Me neither…
My guess for what really happened is a lot more mundane. Probably somebody whipped up a bright purple drink and just gave it a silly name, and here we are!

Purple Hooter Jello Shot Directions
- Place the empty plastic cups on a baking sheet or a muffin tin. This makes it easy to move the jello shooters in and out of the fridge to chill.
- Whisk the grape jello into boiling water, until completely dissolved.
- Stir in the raspberry liqueur, strained lime juice, and vodka.
- Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then pour to fill the plastic cups.
- Place the jello shots in the fridge until set (about 3 hours).
Prep Tips
- If making ahead of time, I recommend placing the plastic lids on top of the cups to protect the jello. Wait until they’re fully set to do this so the jello doesn’t stick to the lid.
- If you want to garnish your jello shots, you can add whipped cream and/or a maraschino cherry right before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Long Can You Keep Jello Shots In The Fridge?
Jello shots can last for up to a week in the refrigerator. Since these Purple Hooter jello shots don’t have any special toppings, they are a great party recipe to make in advance.
Can You Use A Different Flavor of Jello?
The traditional Purple Hooter drink does not have grape flavored anything — we used grape jello for the bright purple color. The grape jello actually does blend well with the raspberry liqueur, so it tastes berry-licious!
However, if grape jello isn’t your thing or you don’t have any at home, you can swap with another flavor that has the same color. Raspberry jello would also work. If the color turns out more reddish, you can add a few drops of purple food coloring to the jello mixture before you chill it.
