Malibu Rum Punch

The rum punch is a popular cocktail because it is smooth, fruity, and easy to drink. You can hardly taste the alcohol, so this is one that can sneak up on you if you’re not careful!

While it’s generally made with light rum, using coconut rum (like Malibu) gives this island drink a whole new twist! The coconut flavors blend perfectly with fresh fruit juices to create a refreshing summer drink that is always a hit — whether you’re at the beach or poolside. Even if you’re at home, one sip of this Malibu Rum Punch will have you feeling like you’re on vacation!

Prep Tips

  • Be sure not to add the ginger ale or soda to your cocktail shaker, as shaking soda is a recipe for a mess!
  • Garnish your coconut rum punch with orange slices, pineapple wedge, and/or maraschino cherries.
  • If juicing your own fruit to make this recipe, be sure to set aside a bit of the fruit to use as a garnish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to use Malibu Rum?

Malibu is one of the most well-known names for coconut rum and it is often synonymous with the coconut rum punch. Order a “Malibu punch” and any bartender should know exactly what you mean.

That being said, you’re welcome to use another brand of coconut rum for this recipe.

Should I Use Canned Juice or Fresh?

Usually, fresh is best! However, there is an advantage to using canned juice for cocktails: consistency. Fresh fruit can be sour or pulpy, which might not give you the flavor you’re looking for in a drink, so keep that in mind. If using fresh fruit juice, you may want to add a bit of sweetener to your cocktail.

Can You Make This a Frozen Drink?

Sure! If making this as a frozen drink, you can double or even triple the ingredient amounts (depending on the size of your blender). Add everything to the blender with ice — except ginger ale. For the frozen version, you’ll want to skip that so it doesn’t bubble up too much during blending. Use extra juice in its place.

Another tip for making a frozen coconut rum punch is to use frozen juice concentrate instead of liquid juice. This can reduce the amount of ice you need and keep the drink from tasting watered down.

Can You Use a Different Type of Rum?

If coconut rum isn’t your thing, you can swap it for plain light rum or dark rum. Simply follow the recipe as written, substituting with your choice of rum. You could also use vodka instead, as it pairs well with fruity flavors too.

What kind of glass should you use?

Any glass will do! From a highball to a hurricane glass, the choice is yours. If you use a larger glass than we did, simply add more soda to top it off.
