The Dark & Stormy is a classic cocktail made with dark rum, ginger beer, and lime. It’s sweet, sour, and spicy and uniquely refreshing!

Dark and Stormy Cocktail
If you love the taste of a Moscow Mule, you’ll love the flavors in this dark and stormy cocktail recipe! This popular craft cocktail features a dark rum, a hint of ginger beer, and a twist of lime for a flavorful cocktail perfect for any occasion. It’s essentially a Moscow Mule, but made with dark rum instead of vodka, and served in a highball glass rather than a copper mug.
The Dark and Stormy is cool, spicy, tart, and refreshing. It’s unique and moody and perfect when you want something that’s a little different than the usually very sweet cocktails made with rum.
Who Invented The Dark & Stormy?
The original Dark ‘N Stormy cocktail recipe was created by Gosling’s Black Seal® Rum in collaboration with Barritt’s Ginger Beer, as a way to promote their products. Eventually the partnership fell apart, with Gosling’s staking its claim to the drink name and even filing a trademark for the name “Dark ‘N Stormy.” It is one of the few cocktail names with a trademark!

Prep Tips
- Rum – While Gosling’s Black Seal® Rum is the traditional choice for this recipe, you could in a pinch use any dark rum that you have on hand. The flavor wouldn’t be exactly the same if made with spiced rum or light rum, but it would still be a tasty variation!
- Glassware – A highball glass or tall cocktail glass would be the traditional vessel for the Dark & Stormy cocktail. But again, you can use what you prefer or have handy.
- Variations – This is a fairly tart drink, but for a sweeter drink, you can add a 1/2 ounce of simple syrup to the drink and give a quick stir.
- Garnish – The classic garnish for a dark and stormy cocktail is a lime wheel or lime wedge.
