Gin Martini

When it comes to cocktails, the gin martini is one of the classics. And you sure feel classy drinking one too!

This is perhaps one of the oldest cocktail recipes. Martinis were immensely popular in the midcentury, but it was likely invented much, much earlier. Though no one knows exactly who deserves the credit!

A gin martini is smooth and strong, with a hint of floral and herbaceous notes. Did I mention that this is a strong drink? That’s because the primary ingredients is straight gin!

And while stirring with ice mellows the gin a touch, it is still the main component and the first thing you’ll taste. So a gin martini isn’t for everyone! But if you’re a gin drinker, this is one of the go-to cocktails that should be in your repertoire!

How to Make a Dirty Martini

A “dirty” martini is so-named because the addition of olive brine creates a slightly cloudy appearance. Or a really cloudy appearance depending on how much olive flavor you like!

To make a dirty gin martini, add 1/2 ounce to an ounce of olive juice to the cocktail shaker and stir with the rest of the ingredients. Strain into your chilled martini glass and garnish with a spear of cocktail olives.

Prep Tips

  • Chill your martini glasses in the freezer for about 30 minutes before using them. An ice-cold glass will help keep your martini colder longer.
  • Traditionally, a martini is garnished with either a lemon twist or olives. You could also try an orange peel or cocktail onions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Should You Stir a Gin Martini?

James Bond always requests his martinis “shaken, not stirred.” However, stirring is actually considered the “proper” way to make a martini.

Shaking a martini with ice waters down the spirits (whether you’re using gin or vodka or any other type of liquor). In addition, vigorous shaking breaks up ice into small pieces and introduces air bubbles into the drink. The result is a diluted and almost slushy consistency.

Of course, the “right” way to make a drink is how YOU like it! If you’re looking for a less-stronger martini, then perhaps shaking is the way to go. But if you want to stick to the traditional preparation, stir it.

What is the Best Gin to Use for a Martini?

The best gin to use for a martini is the gin that YOU like, since the gin is what you primarily taste.

Normally for mixed drinks, I recommend choosing a mid-range or moderately priced spirit, since mixers usually blend with the liquor and can mask some of its flavors. No need to use $100 tequila in a margarita if you’re going to combine it with sweet and sour!

However, a gin martini is ALL about the gin, so pick one that you enjoy! It doesn’t have to be the most expensive, just what you like to drink.
